This first news letter is from Emile about Christiane Saad.

I have chosen to write this first news letter on the 61^st anniversary of my wife Christiane (Van de Velde) Saad. Today she is in Ouanaminthe Haiti, to activate what has to be done for the opening of the school on September 3^rd 2007.

We have volunteered in the past in Conakry Republic of Guinea in 1997-1998. We have also taught in a missionary school in Sosua, Dominican Republic. Since then we keep good relations with Kelly and Rob Neilson whom have founded www.islandimpact.net a medical mission in Sosua. We have always kept in mind to open a school to teach French and we would call it ABC Dominican Educative…………

As we both worked in Haiti (1999-2002) we kept very good contact with our friends Frérot and Marie Joseph Bernard from Ouanaminthe. On April 22^nd 2007 we drove 4 hours from Puerto Plata DR to Ouanaminthe Haiti to have lunch with them. Frérot was talking with Christiane about his project to open a school teaching French in Ouanaminthe.

This was the trigger for the opening of Alliance Belgium Canadian Haitian Educative an NGO with a French school “Le Samarit”. So instead of starting in Dominican Republic we started the same project in Haiti.

In two month as you can see from the section ABC photos on June 7^th 2007 the house of Frérot changed to a school that will have 4 classrooms as a start. Christiane and Emile gave some of the ideas and Frérot and Marie Joseph are continuing on the construction of the 2 new class rooms and to finish the furniture.

Meanwhile Christiane is preparing the pedagogic material and Emile is working of the web page.

The four of us Frérot, Marie Joseph, Christiane and Emile have put some of our savings to get started and of course we have approached some of the non profitable organizations but unfortunately no help can be expected before we complete our 3^rd year of existence. If any of you can pull some strings to obtain some help (from Canadian CIDA, Plan International, PAM ….) it will be greatly appreciated.

The government of Haiti have little public school in Ouanaminthe and as a private school we are not expected to charge more that 100.- gourde for inscription and 2,500.- gourde for full year scholarship ……….equivalent of US $68.- for a full academic year. With this amount we have to pay the teachers, security, Director of school, with practically no rent for the 1^st year (donation of Frérot Bernard). How can we continue without your support, that's why we count on any small donation to assure continuity.

Christiane, Marie Joseph, Frérot and Emile with their savings built 2 more class rooms with glass windows and doors, hand manufactured 12 tables and 24 benches for the kids, the rooms are painted with alphabet and days of the month and even the black board is painted on the wall….in green, new fashion. We also bought some of the schooling material to get the school started. In the future Islandimpact team will help us with the medical support to the kids.

To give you an idea of Ouanaminthe , no electricity, dust roads, no paved roads, poor people wash their laundry in the river and most of the women cross the border to Dajabon Dominican Republic to sell either shoes or used clothing ( pépé ) twice a week to gain some money. On these 2 days of market kids will get to school and expect to be fed at least some rice with bean sauce.

With your donations we will be able to feed them till PAM will recognize our school and grant us some rice, oil and beans. If any body who is reading this news letter can help us with PAM please do so.

Kind of help you can do is to find connections in Canada, United States, or Belgium to grant us AID to buy 2 solar panels, 4 batteries and an inverter so we could buy a used computer to connect to internet and put at least a bulb and a fan in each of our 4 class rooms.
